Don't know if this will interest you guys, but a friend and I were curious about the Kalash RK-12, and found out some interesting info (maybe some of you know this already, if so apologies for this post).

I have had my Kalash RK-01 - AKS74U replica - since it first became available in the UK. It's been a fantastic little AEG and has suffered terrible abuse in my hands but still performs reliably and well. But recently I have felt mine needed a little bit of a make-over...

By chance I saw Kalash's RK-12 model and this looked good to me. Basically it's a steel version of the RK01, but with newer black plastic furniture, giving it a very smart tactical look.

Kalash also started to release the individual steel and plastic parts for the RK-12, so I thought it might be nice to upgrade my RK-01 to RK-12 standard. Giving me an almost new AEG again!

The one reservation I had was that the RK-01 wasn't - I thought - a 'real' AK. I thought it was like the Spetz, a made up model.

However, I have now found out that the Kalash RK-12 is actually based on the Arsenal Inc. (USA) model called the SLR-106. This is a 5.45x39 or 5.56x45 rifle furnished by Arsenal specially for the American market - as such, while it isn't in the Russian army inventory, at least it is a 'real' gun.

Above - the real SLR-106, here in 5.56x45mm NATO configuration. The PBS-5 is actually a dummy, designed to hide the extended barrel required by US gun regulations.

You can check out the Arsenal SLR-106 and it's variants here: Arsenal Inc. (USA) - SLR-106 series

Kalash RK-12 parts are available from most good AEG retailers in Hong Kong.
