AK-47


The AK-47 (Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947 ; Russian: Автомат Калашникова образца 1947 года) is a gas-operated assault rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, produced by Russian manufacturer IZH, and used in many Eastern bloc nations during the Cold War. It was adopted and standardized in 1947. Compared to the autoloading rifles used in World War II, the AK-47 was generally lighter, more compact, with a shorter range, a smaller 7.62 × 39 mm cartridge, and was capable of selective fire. It was one of the first true assault rifles, and remains the most widely used. The AK-47 and its numerous variants have been produced in greater numbers than any other assault rifle, and it remains in production to this day.

AK-74


The AK-74 assault rifle is the modernized version of the AK-47 developed in 1974, chambered in a smaller cartridge (5.45 x 39 mm vs. 7.62 x 39 mm). The weapon went into mass-production in 1976. The newest variant, the AK-74M, is the main service rifle for the Russian Federation armed forces and has been since the early 1990's.

When it first appeared, the AK-74 was assumed to be a limited-production version to equip special forces. In reality, the Soviet Union was to mass-produce this rifle to replace their inventory of AKM weapons en masse.

AK100 series


The AK-101 is an assault rifle of the Kalashnikova series. The AK-101 is designed for the world export market, using standard NATO 5.56x45 mm caliber cartridges, which is the standard of all NATO armies. The AK-101 is aimed at those looking for the logistical compatibility and familiarity of the 5.56x45 NATO round with the proven quality and reliability of a Kalashnikov. Potential customers may be Western oriented countries looking for just that. It is designed with modern and composite materials, including plastics that reduce weight and improve accuracy. Many of the improvements found in the AK-101 are also present in the AK-103 and the rest of the AK-10X series of rifles.

A common misconception is that the AK-101 has entered service as the main assault rifle of the Russian Federation, but this is not true, the AK-74M is still the main assault rifle, with the AN-94 entering limited service in the elite forces of the Russian military, some Russian police forces, and the Internal Ministry of Affairs.

AN 94 Abakan


The AN-94 Abakan is a current Russian assault rifle. The acronym stands for Avtomat Nikonova (after Gennadiy Nikonov) Model 1994, and it was chosen over many other competing firearms in an extensive trial, including the AEK-971 design by a team led by the son of Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47. The AN-94 was designed at the Izhmash state factories, as a replacement for the aging AK-74 assault rifle currently in use in the Russian military. Currently, the Russian military is retaining the AK-74M as its standard shoulder arm and the AN-94 is only being issued to the elite forces of the Russian military, some Russian police forces, and the MVD.



It is chambered in the same 5.45 x 39 mm cartridge as the AK-74, and it too utilizes a rotating bolt to lock the action. This is where the similarities end. Nikonov and the other engineers use the Russian term "смещенный импульс свободного затвора" to describe the rifle's method of operation, meaning "blowback shifted pulse." When the bolt-carrier is driven backwards by the force of the gas from the cartridge, a pulley activates a cartridge-feeding device. This mechanism allows a much higher rate of fire than would otherwise be possible. This high rate of fire (1800 round/min) is employed in two-round bursts. These form the first two shots on fully-automatic fire, with following rounds fired at 600 rds/min. This is highly effective against body armour – the second round impacts at the same point as the first, enabling the penetration of armour that a conventional 5.45 mm weapon cannot. For this reason it is employed by certain anti-terrorist army units.
